Finally - Microsoft releases new service packs for SQL 2008
For those of you who missed it, Microsoft has finally released new service packs for SQL 2008 and SQL 2008 R2.
For SQL 2008 it is SP4 that applies, and it includes all fixes up to CU17(http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44278)
For SQL 2008 R2, SP3 applies, and it includes all fixes up to CU13(http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44271)
Both also contain the safety bulletin MS14-044.
Generally speaking, it's time to review your SQL instances and start looking at SQL 2012, or even SQL 2014, as both SQL 2008 and SQL 2008 R2 are in "extended support", so there will be no more CU's for these.
For those of you who don't know, CU means Cumulative Update, and is a collection of fixes that Microsoft releases periodically, which you can use to update your sql instances. Many companies don't want to install these as they are not as thoroughly tested as their service packs, which is why service packs were so highly anticipated.
An interesting detail is that both have been given the "build number" 6000. (i.e. 10.0.6000, and 10.50.6000)
